(West Sacramento CA.- March 10, 2012)–Sacramento Gold FC squared off against Real San Jose in a Lamar Hunt U.S Open Cup Qualifying match on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at River City High School. Sacramento came out on top 2-0; both goals where scored by Manolo Piña in the first half of competition.

Piña lit up the scoreboard in the 29th minute after an assist from defender Jon Jones.
Slipping behind the back line, Piña was able to collect the pass and beat the San Jose goalie for the easy tap in.

In the 36th minute Gold FC forward Oscar Sandoval snuck out into the flank and delivered a pin-point cross to the pouncing Piña. After trapping the ball, Piña was able to hit a right-footed shot past the-once-again beaten San Jose goal tender.

The second half continued to be dominated by Sacramento. With a stingy defense and with constant ball possession, Gold FC was able to attack from all angles. In the end, after countless Real goalkeeper saves, San Jose was able to keep the score 0-2.

Gold FC Head coach Ruben Mora Jr., recognized the team effort but is focused on working out some of the kinks. Stating, “We are happy with the outcome, but at times we looked a little rusty. The season crept up on us quick and it’s going to take some time, but we will find our rhythm.”

Up next Sacramento will host North Coast Tsunami on March 24, 2012 at 7pm in River City High School.

Gold FC will open regular season play in April. Further team and season detail will be posted at www.sacramentogoldfc.com

Manolo Pina scored both Gold goals. The first, came in the 29th minute on an assist by Marco Ramirez and the second in the 36th minute on an assist by Oscar Sandoval. The Gold dominated play in the second half but were held scoreless, in large part due to several outstanding saves by the San Jose keeper.

Despite several returning players from last year’s inaugural season, the Sacramento Gold is off to a slower-than-hoped-for start in defense of its National Premier Soccer League championship.

Travel weariness and injuries might be factors. The Gold (2-2-2) will play only its second home match at 6 p.m. Sunday (May 22) by hosting FC Hasental (2-4-1) of Thousand Oaks at River City High School.

The Gold roster is led by the NPSL’s 2010 scoring leader, Manolo Pina, but he’s missed three games after a hamstring pull.  Local newcomers include Abrahm Prado from Woodland and Fernando Cabadas, former Major League Soccer player from Sacramento State. The team also is adjusting to the recent death of Gold founder Rich Novoa and a head coaching change, with Ruben Mora Jr. moving up from assistant coach to succeed Rick Caldwell.

Another early challenge for the Gold has been five new Southern California teams in the expanded semi-pro league, led by Hollywood United (7-0-1) which has six shutout victories. The Gold was one of the shutout victims but in a road rematch last week salvaged a 1-1 tie on a late Prado goal.

Pina, however, didn’t play in either game against Hollywood.  “That hurt us because we rely so much on him,” said Mora, confident the Gold will still reach the playoffs in the remaining eight games.–By Jim Jenkins (Courtesy of The Sacramento Bee).
